TV: You grew up in the Midwest. How did the prevailing styles there affect the way you were forced to dress?
AG: I grew up in Indiana. the fashion there was not what I wanted. It wasn’t what I was trying to give. In high school, I decided to stop worrying about what other people think. I said, “You know what? “I’m going to wear what I want to wear.” I went to school in fur coats and heels. I was definitely onto something, but I didn’t really care to pay attention to others.
I’ve been on social media since I was 11 years old. I’ve seen blowup videos before and been bullied by my classmates, but I still showed up in my fur coat, my baggy jeans, and heels and said, “Well, this is me.” But here it is completely different. I live in Los Angeles now and you can wear whatever you want. People here don’t care. If I used the things I use now in Indiana, they I would care and they would say something, but I don’t care.
TELEVISION: What are some of your Aerie favorites?
AG: I love the neon underwear collection. I remember walking into Aerie and seeing neon, and it literally brought me back to my neon stage. I love neon. I’m obsessed with it. Plus, many of the sweaters are very comfortable, and so is the workout gear. Aerie has the most comfortable sweatpants, like the high wrap leggings they have. I literally have like three in my bag now, and I’m just here [in New York] for two days.
TELEVISION: the Christmas season is approaching. Do you like to give or receive gifts?
AG: I am definitely a gift giver. 100 percent. I love receiving gifts. I just don’t have the best reactions because I’m either a soft reacter or a late reacter. However, giving gifts is a lot of fun. It made my day. I love listening to people for years and finally finding the perfect gift for them. It’s what I like to do the most. I think it’s my only hobby.
TELEVISION: What Aerie thing do you imagine giving away from their latest collection?
