Recycling garments and accessories is complicated by items with closures such as zippers, as these components often require specialized processes for separation and recycling, but zipper manufacturer YKK is changing this with the introduction of a recyclable zipper. DynaPel is a water-repellent zipper that was created to support garment recycling systems and break down barriers related to textile-to-textile recycling.
This waste-reducing zipper design from YKK was developed in collaboration with sustainable textile manufacturer Green Theme Technologies using their Empel technology to replace commonly used PU film.
DynaPel has the potential to support the future of circular fashion, while eliminating the challenges that the polyurethane film used for zippers often causes to current recycling systems.
