Rashmika Mandanna prepares with Teen Vogue at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024

He Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024 could have been all about celebrating Japanese animation – but beauty and fashion didn’t take a backseat either, and Rashmika Mandanna is here to prove it.

One day before the awards, teen fashion He sat down with Mandanna backstage at the ceremony venue to chat about all things anime. Backstage, the star is visibly filled with excitement, partly because of the spectacle and partly because it is her first time in Japan. “I’ve wanted to come to Japan for…God knows how long,” she says. “Today is my first day in Japan and I have little butterflies in my stomach, because I’m thinking, ‘Let me go see the anime there, the mangas and everything, the chaos, the love.’ It’s amazing.”

Despite a hectic schedule with rehearsals, tests and interviews, Mandanna made sure to reserve enough free time to go out and explore the Japanese capital, dedicating a block just to buying merchandise. “You don’t have much access to [anime and manga merch] coming home, and that’s something I’ll take home a lot,” he says with a cheeky smile. “I literally want to buy a suitcase in Japan, put all the anime stuff in it, and take it home. I will have to pay a lot for extra luggage at the airport.”

As an anime fan since 2004, being a presenter at this year’s ceremony was no small feat for Mandanna. “[Growing up,] “I wasn’t much of a person who went out and played sports, so I was at home trying to watch content on television,” she recalls. “ [One day] I met animax [and] That was a channel that introduced me to anime. My first show was naruto. I grew up watching naruto and Naruto Shippuden.”

“Believe animated “She had a great influence on my status as an actor,” he continues, referring to how animated she is on screen. “My fans keep saying that I have very expressive words. [faces] in my movies. In anime, I still love how each frame has a different expression on the characters and I think it had a big influence on my career. So actually I assure you, it’s not even a joke. “I literally grew up watching anime and who I am today is a little influenced by anime.”

For any skeptics of the medium, Mandanna recommends Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions, Murderer of demons, Jujutsu Kaisen, Orangeand Your lie in April as great starters. “I couldn’t stop crying,” she says of the latter. “And even though you’re crying, you still want to go back and see him again.”
