FKA Twigs defends her Calvin Klein ad following UK Advertising Standards Authority ban

FKA twigs is talking after her Calvin Klein the ad was banned by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

the ad, which shows the musician wearing an oversized denim shirt over his naked body, was banned by the organization after the campaign sparked complaints. “the ad used nudity and focused on the figure of FKA Twig. [sic] physical features more than clothing, to the extent that it presented her as a stereotypical sexual object,” ASA wrote in its evaluation. “Therefore, we conclude [the ad] “It was irresponsible and likely to cause serious offence.”

Shortly after the ASA released its statement, FKA Twigs shared the banned image on her Instagram, calling out the double standard of her ad being taken down when other similar photos were not. “I don’t see the ‘stereotypical sex object’ I’ve been labeled with,” he wrote. “I see a beautiful, strong woman of color whose incredible body has overcome more pain than you can imagine,” the musician wrote.

“In light of reviewing other past and current campaigns of this nature, I can’t help but feel there is a double standard here,” FKA Twigs continued. “To be clear… I am proud of my physique and I have the art that I create with my vessel according to the standards of women like Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt and Grace Jones, who broke the barriers of what it means to be empowered and harness a unique embodied sensuality”.

Twigs went on to thank Calvin Klein and photographers Mert and Marcus, who “gave me a space to express myself exactly how I wanted. “I will not allow them to change my narrative.”

the campaign also includes two images of Kendall Jenner: in one, she is wearing a bra and jeans, pulling down her pants to reveal her underwear; In the other, she poses topless in jeans while she sits on the floor with her arms over her breasts. Those images were evaluated by the ASA, but were not banned.
