When asked about Kazarian’s situation, Pavel Tregubov, FIDE technical delegate at the tournament, said the New York Times: “I understand your point of view.” He went on to say that FIDE will work to clarify the definition of sports footwear in its dress code for the future.
Tregoubov also said the yellow warning sheets were a new procedure being implemented to enforce the dress code. Several were issued at the tournament, and all were for shoes after referees determined they were too sporty. He said the others accepted his, and only Kazarian spoke about it.
Kazarian, who started playing chess at the age of six, was the Dutch women’s online chess champion in 2020. She also owns the titles of FIDE Master and Women International Master, recognitions she received in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
